How to use the Bootrec exe tool to repair startup issues in Windows Vista by Britec You can use the Bootrec.exe tool in the Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE) to troubleshoot and repair the following items in Windows Vista: A master boot record (MBR) A boot sector A Boot Configuration Data (BCD) store Note When you are troubleshooting startup issues by using the Windows RE, you should first try the Startup Repair option in the System Recovery Options dialog box. If the Startup Repair option does not resolve the issue, or if you must troubleshoot more steps manually, use the Bootrec.exe tool. Bootrec.exe options The Bootrec.exe tool supports the following options. Use the option that is appropriate for your situation. Note If rebuilding the BCD does not resolve the startup issue, you can export and delete the BCD, and then run this option again. By doing this, you make sure that the BCD is completely rebuilt. It places a lot of emphasis on safety and user control, which aren’t always compatible in free system cleaners. It manages to be both safe and easy to use, on the one hand, and thorough and effective on the other, thanks to a PDF-based manual, clear explanations of each step, user-selectable safety levels, considerable built-in backup capabilities, and plenty of warnings when appropriate. Setup takes 2 to 10 minutes, but it only has to be done once. The main interface is a simple affair with just three buttons: Clean and fix my computer, Backups, and Settings. We opened the Settings first, making few changes to the default options, which include fonts, destination directories, and backup settings. As its first duty, the program scanned our system thoroughly, returning PC and registry health scores in the high 90s. However, anything less than 100 percent on each score is grounds for improvement, according to PowerTools, so we clicked the Clean button. If this happens in long terms, the junk could really add up and hog up your disk space, and quite possibly slow your PC down. But good thing there’s CCleaner, which is a free donationware program. I’ve been using it for months now, and I must admit it’s done quite a fine job of cleaning out my pc of junk files and registry issues. There’s 3 tools all packed in one little neat program – a junk files cleaner, a registry cleaner, and an uninstaller that does a lot of a better job than the default Windows “Add or Remove Programs”. However, the registry search isn’t very in depth at all, I recommend Comodo Registry Cleaner for cleaning your registry. See my other video for that.
